Former Manchester City striker Darren Beckford has died at the age of 59. The Manchester-born forward came through City’s youth team and made his first-team debut in 1984, when he was just 16.
News of his death was confirmed by several of his former clubs on social media on Sunday 8 November. No cause of death has been given.
City led the tributes. “Manchester City is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former City player and Academy graduate, Darren Beckford – truly one of our own. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Darren’s family and friends at this difficult time,” the club said in a post on X.
Who was Darren Beckford?
Beckford was one of the bright young talents of City’s youth set-up in the mid-1980s. City fans who watched him come through remember the strike partnership he formed with fellow youngster Paul Moulden, and many believed both had big futures ahead of them.
His brother Jason also played for City, making more than 20 appearances in the late 1980s.
Darren had loan spells at Bury and then Port Vale before a permanent move to Vale Park in 1987. That started the longest spell of his career: four years and more than 150 appearances for Vale.
A club record move to Norwich
In June 1991 Norwich City paid Vale £925,000 for him, a club record fee at the time. Then Canaries boss Dave Stringer called him “the answer to the Norwich supporters’ prayers.”
Injuries made his first season at Carrow Road hard going. A thigh problem in pre-season was followed by a double hernia operation around Christmas. But he still had his big day: a hat-trick in a 4-3 win over Everton that helped Norwich stay up in 1991-92. He scored 13 goals in 49 games for the club in all competitions.
Oldham, Hearts and beyond
Beckford joined Oldham Athletic for £300,000 in March 1993 and scored 11 goals in 52 appearances. After leaving Boundary Park in 1996 he moved to Scotland with Hearts, where he scored during their run to the Scottish League Cup final.
He then had short spells at Fulham, Walsall, Rushden & Diamonds, Southport, Total Network Solutions, Bury and Bacup Borough before he retired.
Tributes from his former clubs
Oldham said everyone at the club was “deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Darren Beckford,” and sent their “heartfelt condolences” to his family, friends and former team-mates.
Port Vale, where he spent his best years, said he had passed away on Sunday morning. “Our thoughts are with Darren’s friends, family and former team mates. He will of course be forever Valiant. RIP Darren,” the club said.
The City supporters’ group the 1894 Group remembered him simply: “Darren Beckford, brother of Jason. Local lad who played for City in the 80s. So young. RIP.”
One of our own
City’s academy is in fine shape today, with the Under-18s winning their first eight league games this season and a new club museum opening at the Etihad in December. Beckford belongs to an earlier chapter of that story: a local lad who broke into the first team at 16 and went on to play for clubs in England, Scotland and Wales.
Our thoughts are with Darren’s family and friends, and with everyone at the clubs he served. Rest in peace, Darren.
