Mathis Albert Man City interest is hotting up, with BILD reporting that Manchester City sit at the front of the queue for the 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund winger, who has just become the youngest goalscorer in the history of the USA national team.

City’s search for young talent has taken them to Borussia Dortmund again, and the club have reportedly been monitoring the teenager for months. According to the report, they already tried to lure him to the Etihad in both the January and summer transfer windows.

It is the kind of move Enzo Maresca’s recruitment team keeps being linked with. We recently covered how City are scouting Porto’s Victor Froholdt, and how the club hold a pre-agreement for Philadelphia Union’s Cavan Sullivan.

Mathis Albert Man City transfer: what BILD are reporting

BILD state that no concrete offer has reached Dortmund’s management, but the club are well aware of the persistent interest in their rising star. Dortmund are known as a talent factory, with Jude Bellingham, Erling Haaland, Jadon Sancho and Ousmane Dembele among the names they have developed and then sold for huge fees.

Reports about interest from the biggest clubs followed Albert’s international breakthrough, and one report in the US insisted that City are very interested in the winger’s development.

Who is Mathis Albert? The youngest USA goalscorer ever

Albert made headlines in September when he scored for the USA in a 4-2 win over Chile. At 17 years, four months and eight days old, he became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the US national team, and in doing so surpassed Christian Pulisic, another Dortmund alumnus.

The Mathis Albert Man City story therefore has real momentum behind it. A teenager who has already broken a record held by one of American football’s biggest names is exactly the profile the Bundesliga side’s academy is famous for producing.

Why Man City lead Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal for Mathis Albert

Beyond City, three other top English clubs have set their sights on Albert: Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. All three are keeping a close eye on the progress of the youngest US player in the Bundesliga’s history, according to BILD.

However, BILD say their chances of signing him are likely lower than City’s. The German outlet do not state why, just that it is the case. The assumption is that City can afford to pay fees the other clubs may shy away from.

Either way, the belief is that Manchester City are at the front of the queue and already making efforts to secure his signature.

Author opinion

This feels like a deal that is only going to get more expensive. City have tried twice already and been unsuccessful, which tells you Dortmund are in no hurry, and a record-breaking international goal will not have lowered the asking price. Still, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all watching, a third attempt, backed by City’s spending power, looks the likeliest to land.
