Chelsea sweat on their England forward’s hamstring with Man City Women due at Stamford Bridge in 11 days

Chelsea are waiting to find out how bad Lauren James’s hamstring injury is, and the answer matters to Manchester City Women as much as anyone, with the two sides meeting at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 14 November.

James limped out of Chelsea’s 6-0 Women’s Super League win over Charlton Athletic at The Valley on Sunday. Sonia Bompastor could only confirm afterwards that the problem was with her hamstring, and said she expected a clearer picture once the forward had been assessed on Monday.

By the early hours of Tuesday, Chelsea had not made the result of that assessment public. So for now, the WSL’s two front-runners head into the next fortnight with a big question hanging over one of the attackers Manchester City would least like to see on the teamsheet.

How serious is Lauren James’s injury?

Nobody outside the club knows yet. What we do know is how the afternoon unfolded. James started on the left of Chelsea’s front line and had an influential opening spell before the hamstring forced her off early.

She was one of the few players Bompastor kept in the side. The Chelsea head coach made seven changes for the trip, bringing in Keira Walsh, Melvine Malard and captain Nathalie Bjorn, yet James held on to her place. That tells you how highly Bompastor rates her.

The game itself was over early. Bjorn scored in the third minute, Malard struck twice in the 10th and 19th minutes either side of an Ellie Carpenter goal in the 13th, and Aggie Beever-Jones and Giulia Dragoni added second-half goals in the 57th and 66th minutes.

Why Chelsea fans fear the worst

They have seen this before. In April 2025 James came off at half-time of England’s 5-0 win over Belgium with a hamstring problem, and Chelsea later confirmed she would miss a period of time.

That injury ended her season. It also kept her out of the first leg of Chelsea’s Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, which they lost 4-1. Bompastor said back then that she was not concerned, but she would not put a date on a return and admitted hamstring injuries in the women’s game can be serious.

Chelsea vs Man City Women: what is at stake on 14 November?

A lot. The win at Charlton put Chelsea back on top of the WSL, but only on goal difference. They are level on points with City, and the gap is all at the back and in front of goal: Chelsea have scored 27 and conceded four for a goal difference of +23, while City sit on +12.

Chelsea’s schedule is packed before the big one. They host Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 7 November (12.45pm, live on Sky Sports), an Everton side marshalled by City loanee Naomi Layzell, who was Player of the Match as they held Manchester United. City and Everton have history in the women’s game, too, with City having signed goalkeeper Sandy MacIver from Everton. Then comes a Women’s Champions League trip to Hacken on Tuesday 10 November, before City visit Stamford Bridge on Saturday 14 November with a 1.30pm kick-off live on BBC One.

City will have their own threats to worry Chelsea. Only Khadija Shaw and Lauren Hemp of Manchester City, plus Tottenham’s Victoria Pelova, have had more touches in the opposition box in the WSL than Chelsea’s Carpenter, on 56, and only Hemp has created more chances than her.

Verdict: City cannot bank on a Lauren James absence

It is tempting for City fans to see this as a gift. It isn’t, or at least not yet. If the scan comes back clean, James could be fit for the Everton game and ready for City a week later.

The bigger point is that goal difference. An 11-goal gap means a draw at Stamford Bridge suits Chelsea far more than it suits City. With James or without her, the Blues’ squad is deep enough to make seven changes and still win 6-0, which is a reminder of what City are up against. City should go to Stamford Bridge to win, whoever Bompastor picks.
