Manchester City central defender Aymeric Laporte has dismissed Virgil Van Dijk’s comments and stated that Sergio Ramos is the best defender in the world.
Liverpool fans might not be too happy with Laporte after the Frenchman snubbed away Van Dijk’s comments who claimed that he was not a fan of Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. The Spanish international dented Liverpool’s hopes of winning the Champions League when he injured Reds talisman Mohamed Salah in the final which cut short the Egyptian’s game.
Van Dijk recently spoke to the Telegraph and claimed that Ramos was not his type of defender and that he preferred Ramos’ centre-back partner Raphael Varane instead. But Laporte went against the Dutchman’s comments and has labeled Ramos as the benchmark for central defenders.
While speaking to the Evening Standard, the 24-year-old Frenchman revealed that he wanted to become the best defender in the world but Sergio Ramos currently holds that title, “Do I want to be the best defender in Europe? Of course. Any defender will tell you that – who wouldn’t want to be the best? Sergio Ramos is probably the best center-back in the world at the moment as we know we have to match his standards or better him if we are to be as good as he is. The city has Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, John Stones – all great defenders and we can all learn off each other. To get to the top, you must have an edge to your game, as Ramos does.”
32-year-old Ramos is no stranger to controversy as the Real Madrid superstar has received 24 red cards in his entire career and over 270 cards in total, which also has his name mixed with the dark side of the football.
Ramos has managed to win every single trophy in world football and he will definitely go down as one of the greatest defenders in the world. So it’s understandable that Laporte’s comments are based on the silverware and fearlessness of the Madrid star.
