Manchester City’s interest in Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong may not materialize this summer after all if reports from journalist Dean Jones are to be believed.
There were reports about ManCity considering a £90 million bid for the Netherlands international who currently earns a whooping £620,000 per week at Barcelona.
The departure of Ilkay Gundogan has created a void in midfield for Pep as he would aim for another treble this season. However, Manchester City are also exploring other options in the midfield – Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga has caught attention but Liverpool, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the 21-year-old and PSG are particularly eager to lure Veiga to Ligue 1 instead of the Premier League. Barcelona have also expressed interest in Veiga, but Paris Saint-Germain are intensifying its efforts to sign him.
Man City have already announced the signing of Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea, and they are also close to securing another Croatian in RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol in a record-breaking £86 million deal for a defender. However, Jones believes that a move for De Jong is unlikely for the Cityzens this summer. He suggests that Gabri Veiga is a more realistic target. While there may still be surprises in store from Manchester City in the transfer market, Gvardiol remains their priority.
Other players linked with a move to Manchester City this summer include RB Salzburg playmaker Oscar Gloukh, who is also being tracked by Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Barcelona, and Villarreal. Additionally, Argentine reporter Bruno Gonzalez Garcia has claimed that Manchester United and Manchester City have inquired about Thiago Almada from Atlanta United.
As the transfer window progresses, Manchester City will need to assess alternative targets to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
