A wind of change is blowing up North in Scottish football. Clubs within England and abroad are making strategic moves to capture the cream of Scotland’s talented teenagers. In the last five years, clubs down south in particular have identified and lured Scottish academy talents into their youth sides.

One of the high profile transfers occurred in 2017 with Billy Gilmour swapping Rangers Blue for Chelsea’s Blue, after turning down a professional contract at Ibrox. The 20-year old has gone on to make his international debut and continues to improve and develop in leaps and bounds. Like Gilmour, 19-year old Liam Morrison swapped Scotland this time for Germany, joining Bayern Munich’s academy in August 2019. Morrison has been likened to German defender, Matts Hummels due to his cultured build-up play from the back.

In 2022, a new target for English and other European clubs has emerged from the academy at Rangers. At 18 years old, Alexander Lowry has gradually developed into a top player for Glasgow giants Rangers. After making his debut in early 2022, Lowry has emerged as a target for a number of Premier League sides as he enters the final 12 months of his contract this summer.

Alex Lowry is an 18-year old Scottish footballer who currently plies his trade with Glasgow giants, Rangers. He has been with the club since age 10 and has rapidly risen through the various age groups culminating in a goal on his debut for Rangers. The Scottish U19 international’s debut goal was selected as the Scottish Cup’s goal of the fourth round.

What position(s) does ALEX LOWRY play for Rangers?

Lowry has featured predominantly in the attacking midfield role for both Rangers and the Scottish youth teams. His skills on the ball combined with his playmaking ability make a very potent weapon in attack. Lowry is also extremely versatile and can feature out wide and even as a false nine when necessary. Former Rangers manager Graeme Murty praised the youngster’s technical ability in an interview with the BBC. Murty praised his self-confidence and amazing range of passing, which allows him to glide past players and influence play from the middle of the park.

Which Premier League clubs are interested in signing Alex Lowry?

Reports in the British media suggest that Manchester City are keenly watching the youngster after being impressed with his progress in recent months. Up until recently, Newcastle United were reportedly frontrunners for Lowry as they seek to rebuild their squad with a mix of proven stars and youngsters with potential. Alex Lowry currently has a year left on his contract at Ibrox and has been offered a new contract to stay at the club.

A move to Manchester City would be a dream move for any youngster. However, a move of that sort would see Lowry move on loan in order to gain experience considering the quality of the current crop of City midfielders. On the other hand, a move to Tyneside would present an opportunity to get regular minutes at a club without too much pressure on his young shoulders. Staying at Rangers has not been ruled out but with the big fish from the Premier League circling, it is only a matter of time before Alex Lowry’s neck gets turned by the lucrative offers.
